A Message From Our Fearless Leader
This week, we're opening a very special show.
As a child, one of my favorite books to read at this time of year was the irreverent and heart-warming classic "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" by Barbara Robinson.
For awhile, we didn't do holiday shows at Epic. It didn't seem like we could find material that would fit our mission, but then a bunch of unruly schoolboys showed up and changed everything.
Now we've got a rowdy new bunch to deal with--The Herdmans.
A bunch of kids who are nothing like the sort of precocious and precious children you normally see in a story for young readers, but they are a lot like kids you've probably met in real life--and you might have the scars to prove it.
When I got the idea to do this show, I sat down with the script--hoping it wouldn't pull any punches. While the book is for children, it doesn't shy away from big themes and bold characters. Like "A Christmas Story," it offers a more cynical take on the season, which makes its ending all the more poignant.
This adaptation works for so many reasons, not the least of them being that Barbara Robinson took it upon herself to bring it to the stage.
And what a stage we've got for you!
In the spirit of joy and friendship, we've asked our friends at the Academy Players to host us for a limited run of this very special production, and we've tasked one of our favorite actors, Kevin Thibault, with directing a group of adult and child actors that we just know you're going to love. Academy continues to be one of our most generous collaborators, and they always make us feel right at home.
Someone commented recently that this is the third family friendly show we've done in a matter of months. While that was only a coincidence, there is something to be said for shows that you can enjoy with all your loved ones, especially at this time of year.
While it may not be our typical fare, "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" is still an Epic show to its core. After all, who understands the Power of the Truth better than a child?
Thank you for showing us so much love and support this year. Consider this production our very own gift to you.
